"You don't take a photograph , YOU make it" -Ansel Adams
Statement of intent-
What is your aim?
For my Portrait project I am going to aim to produce a magazine cover showing my ideas from my creative work. At the end of my project I will chose my favorite magazine cover and I will use that. With the theme of Portrait I aiming to use black and white as well as color for my magazine cover . I chose black and white because you can see how somebody is feeling through a picture and infer their feelings. But I also chose color because it brings a mood to the picture whether it is a dark color showing deep feelings or a bright color showing happiness or any mood in general. I also chose magazine covers because using this theme you can be whoever you want to be in the picture, whether that is a model, fashion designer or a fashion star and would be a creative idea. Overall these themes inspire me to be creative.
What is your initial research?
For my initial research I will start looking at famous magazine covers and take inspiration. For example Rihanna . At the moment I have two to look at Magdiel Lopez which is a colorful, bright and uplifting front cover for a magazine, he takes photos of people but then adds color and takes parts out of the face and puts different pieces in but not only that he also takes pictures of buildings and many other cool stuff making him stand out from everyone else. Also Condé Nast who is the creator of Vogue he is a very popular creator and inspires me with my work he takes pictures of models as well but adds words around it and puts them on a front cover of a magazine. Also the Migrant mother who is a women with children who looks like she is going through a hard time just through a camera from the way the photo is taken with all the different camera settings used correctly. I chose these because I feel like they inspire me to be a creator and to stand out when doing my work and be different .
How are you going to chose your theme ?
When I was thinking about this theme I didn't realise when doing it there are more routes to go down with magazines, from colour to black and white to fashion. So when taking the photos I know I can do different themes within fashion and will be able to be very creative. By me choosing different routes to do down it will it will improve my work massively as I will then have mire work and more outcomes which will then be eye catchy and grab attention which is good.
How are you going to show the process?
To show progress I am going to take the photos in a studio setting, using makeup, fashion different lighting and have my camera on a tripod. Then after taking my images I will go onto Photoshop and edit them using different filters like copy and pasting , editing the pictures, adding things in , for example like flowers and covers and taking the model out to see where it leads me . When doing this I will take more ideas from old ones and edit more to make them better. I hope this will lead me in the right direction as it will then boost my work.
How are you going to experiment?
I would like to experiment by getting objects like fairy lights, a DVD to get the rainbow filter on the models face and use different tools and lighting. When using the lighting's I will use my camera settings for the ISO and the White Balance, and use different effects with the lights we will have around us. But when in Photoshop I will use different filters to change it around from being boring to different. I will definitely add colorful lights and the black and white filters to show the progress. I will also research different on-line tutorials to help me refine my skills and develop my knowledge of how to use Photoshop. By me doing this will take my work to a higher level.
Time line-
I have 2-3 months to produce the final portfolio of images that I want. I aim to finish my research in the first few weeks and then start taking photos in the third week in order to give me enough time to edit and make better and to produce my final gallery of images.
What will you do as your work progresses?
As my work progresses I will annotate around my work to show clearly to my peers and my teacher how I am progressing and how my ideas are developing clearly. This will also help me produce and help me reflect back on my work to see where I went wrong to make me go further and learn more. After every shoot I will get feedback on my work to see how I could maybe make it better and more creative as I am always willing to change and make better. After my creation piece I am going to write an evaluation on my work to see what went well and what I could have changed in the time given.

Fashion magazines:
I have chosen this theme because I like how professional it looks and how it persuades you to pick up the magazine to look at it or even read it, this is because of the bright colors and contrast. Also the text is classy and interesting as well as the models on the front. This method inspires me because of the way it is set out and brings people in to look at it. I might try and do this in my work.
Color:
Theme-
I have chosen this theme because I like how bright and colorful they are.The color can represent you as a mood your feeling at that time. In my opinion I think they have used Photoshop to go from real to fake. These pictures stand out because they have a different color on the background from the main subject, this may inspire me to use these effects in my exam.
Black and white:
I have chosen these black and white images because it looks classy and eye-catchy to me. I like how it creates an old fashioned sense also how it will hook people in. I might use this theme in my project as i like the way it looks.

I downloaded this app on my phone because I heard it was a brilliant editing app so I tried it out and it hit all my expectations.
Did you watch a tutorial if so which one ?
Yes I watched a tutorial -https://expertphotography.com/snapseed-tutorial/
What filter did you use?
So at first I took all my pictures then chose my best one to edit then. I went through all the filters to see what ones suited best . I found that the filter strength of +69 looked best, then I went on HDR Scape and changed the high tones to +61, then I went on Glamour Glow and changed the filter strength to +90, then I changed the Grain to +25 and then finally I change the face spotlight to +10.
Did you like the effect?
Yes.
What are you going to try next ?
Next I will choose more than 1 picture to edit and use more effects/filters.

Photography research -
Context-
In this image the photographer has used rule of thirds. 1 third is a child , 2nd third is the women face, the 3rd third is the other child. Also the women's face is right in the sweet spot to make you look right there. The photographer uses black and white to create a dark and dull tone to the image, the color of black and white make the audience get hooked in by the way it was took on a filming camera. The photographer uses a triangle shape as to where the people are lay out so you can focus on the women and the children separate. My eyes are looking at the women's face right in the middle .This image makes me feel scared and worried because us as a audience don't know how they are getting treated and why there is 2 kids hiding their face, them 2 kids could be crying on the women's shoulder, also the women could be looking away because she might be looking at something more disastrous. This picture is took in the moment. The white balance in the image is daylight. The photographer has drawn me in to the women as she looks worried by her facial expressions and body language, also the focus on her face (the sweet spot)to show the impact. In my opinion I really like this image because of the way it is set out and how the photographer has used the camera settings.
Composition-
In this picture I can see that the picture is focused on the women's face and her motion through the picture. When you look at this picture my eyes go straight to the women's face as it the only face that is showing and her showing her emotions. When I look at this picture I can clearly see that there is no leading lines as it is only the women's face. In this picture the photographer has used rule of thirds as one third is the Childs face turning away the second thirds is the other Childs face and the women's face is the main third as it is right in the sweet spot as it is directed in the middle. In this picture I can see that this picture was taken during the time of day as it isn't too dark maybe around 3pm as it isn't to light either. The photographer has used dark colors like black and white , the hue would have been changed to black and white to make it darker. Photoshop would have been used to make the background blurred so all the focus is on the people so it would have been the blurring tool. In this picture there is no patterns or shapes maybe the photographer has done this because the focus should be on the people. When the photographer was taking the picture they would have used just natural lighting or maybe used a tripod so then the picture is good and steady and not blurry or shaky. The photographer would have needed to correct the camera settings so the ISO would have been changed to 3200 or around that as it isn't too dark and the white balance would have been changed too auto and daylight. The aperture would have been changed too f/1.4 as the background is out of focus and the res is as if it was a higher aperture then the background would be in focus. Furthermore the shutter speed would have 1/500 as it is taken quickly and can you see everything clear and has been shot fast. When taking this picture the photographer would have been thinking about if they will need to crop this picture and I think the photographer would have cropped it as not everything is in the picture like the women's bottom half and the children or how as an audience cannot see if the women is sat down on a chair or stood up. This picture has been taken from eye level and straight forward.
Connection-
What is the theme and is it relevant to yours and if so why?
The theme is The great depression .
How can the image link to your work? Is it the content, how it has been taken?
It is useful and does link to my work because I am going to be using this theme in my project and is similar as I am going to take pictures so that you can see the emotions through the pictures and it has been taken on a film camera at eye level.
In your opinion, is there a message behind the image?
I think there is because it shows the poverty at that time so they could be struggling with money as well as the war and the way the women is looking is showing she is desperate through her facial expression .
Why is it a black and white image, would you think about doing this in your project?
I think it is black and white because it shows more sympathy and you can see their struggles through a black and white picture and yes I will use this in my project because I like the theme and I think it would look good and it will get me a good grade.

Comment-
In my opinion I like this work because I think the photographer has clearly put a clever message behind this picture and I would like to do the same and think I will do a good job, the photographer has successfully took a picture that shows a deep meaning. I also like how the picture doesn't have too much going on because when there is too much going on it is hard for the audience who looks at the picture doesn't know what to look at or focus on so it may be a struggle and I would like to do this on my work because then it is better for my viewers too look at my work and not confused. Furthermore I also like the black and white theme and I like the way they have took the picture so you can see the pain and struggle thy are going through.
Mock exam-
I can see a portrait and it is a close up of half of the face focusing our attention onto that. I can also see the girls bright eyes and her freckles. Her beautiful facial features- nose , eyebrows, hair.
Composition-
In this picture there is no foreground or no middle ground distance as her face is so close to the camera so all our focus is onto that and nothing else. In this picture there is no strong leading lines. The photographer has used rule of thirds , her face is on the left side and her hair is on the right. The photographer has also used a sweet spot , the eye would be the sweet spot because it is right in the middle and catches our attention straight away. This has a big impact on the image as it adds some color. This picture is eye level because its right where in front of you. This picture is quite bright and the background isn't in focus its a blur so I think the f stop will be around f2. In this picture the photographer would have used daylight or cloudy because the picture isn't dark it is light so it would have been a bright white balance. The photographer has done a good job to keep the picture correct and not over exposed. I think the photographer has used a tripod so the picture would be perfect and on point not slanted and to make sure the picture is where the photographer wants to be. I think this picture has been manipulated in Photoshop to make the eye more brighter so the photographer would have adjusted the brightness and the contrast also by using adjustment vibrance then focused on the eye. Also to make the background more blurred so only our focus is on the face, photographer would have done this by using the blur tool. This picture would have been cropped to get the background off and has cropped the forehead and the chin maybe to make the photo more focused to our attention. To make this picture better maybe the photographer could have put a coloured branch in the background for example like pink or purple to make thee picture have more color because it only has basic colors.
Connections-
I like this work because it is simple but yet effective. In this picture there is a pale face with a bunch of freckles on the cheeks and nose leading up to he eyes, there is glossy red lips , bright blue eyes with long lashes with brown hair against a blurred background. This work links well as it is very similar to my Portrait work as I did similar work especially with the flower shadows on the face because it adds something extra to the picture so it isn't boring and could get you higher grades. The strengths in this picture are the photographer has kept the picture still to get the best picture, the color contrast work in Photoshop of the eyes and the blurred background. I think the photographer could maybe add more color .
Inspiration-
I would like to achieve a picture like this because it is simple but yet very effective and I like it a lot. I want my outcomes to look like this but them to have more color and something that can stand out and can catch attention straight away. I can use this as an inspiration because I can use the flower effect on the face and I can.

Planning my first photography shoot for my Portrait project.
My first starting point is taking inspirational from the black and white theme as I like it a lot , and I like how it looks classy and eye-catchy to me also how it creates an old fashioned sense also how it will hook people in and catch their attention.
I have chose my model it's going be Arooj Shariff I think she has the perfect profile I am looking for. I will ask her to wear a low shoulder top to make sure her shoulder is showing to make the picture plain. I'm going to start of with my model close to the camera and then we can use Photoshop and experiment with it. For the background it is blurred so I will use the aperture effect and shutter speed to capture the right point. I will experiment around with the camera settings and use a white filter to make the face brighter and adding another layer on the face for the look from the picture. I am going to start off with a series of images to see where I can put the face in the right point. Makeup is needed and certain styled hair to replicate the image I'm being inspired by. When taking the image I will just take a picture of her face with makeup on with her hair styled like that and the rest photo shop. When taking these pictures I need to make sure my camera is charged and I have deleted the previous images so I have space left on my memory. As Arooj is in my lesson I am going to organize the shoot in school and so I will find my location around school that needs to have something to blur out in the background also I need a room I can block out the natural light so it will just focus on the studio lights. This will give me more control over the lighting and help me refine my work. When taking these pictures I will be in a dark room in a dark room with some source of natural light, that will light half of the models face also it has to be dark in the room but I will use lighting effects to create the image I want. |
The equipment I need:
Cling film-
I could use this effect in my photo shoot to show a blurry effect over the camera lens and makes the camera lose focus on the edges of the lens.
Sieve-
I could use this effect by shining a light through the small holes in it to create a spotty pattern on the models face.
Photo shoot 1 - Experimenting to learn how to use studio lights-
Best and Worst-
This is my best picture because the light from the cd has reflected back onto his face and the picture is clear and focused.
This is my worst picture it isn't focused and I didnt change angle of my camera as I wasn't holding the camera steady.
Developing my final outcome-
When developing this picture I changed the opacity, the cut tool and paste tool. I then made a blurry effect with a picture I got on a lake district trip.
Final Outcome-
Experiment 2 - using my model
Best and Worst-
This is my best picture because I like how you can clearly see the models face and it is clear as I held the camera steady , also I like how the models face is in the background.
This is my best picture because I like how the model's face is reflected onto the wall behind and this would make a good Photoshop outcome.
This is my worst picture because it isn't focused and the model wasn't ready, therefore it would not have been a good picture.
This is my worst picture because the model wasn't ready and I didn't hold the camera steady.
Experiment 4- using different model
Best and Worst-
This is my best picture because the model's face was ready and the lighting was good so the picture came out good.
This is my best picture because the model's face was ready and the picture looks like he is feeling an emotion so I could use this on Photoshop to develop it.
This is my worst picture because the model wasn't ready .
This is my worst picture because the model wasn't ready and was looking away .

Evaluation-
1. My starting point was Portrait and I did masks at first but I didn't like it so I changed it to a mask front cover . When doing this I really enjoyed this project and it has taught me to be independent and give me confidence.
2. When doing this project I enjoyed going on Photoshop editing the pictures, taking pictures of my model and being the model for other people.
3. I found new techniques of how to set up a photo shoot and Photoshop skills .For example like putting the cover of the magazine onto the picture also cutting the models face .
4. In the future I would like to develop how I use my camera better and to hold it more still so the picture comes out more clearer because on these pictures my images were blurry and not very focused so maybe it would've pushed my grade up.
5. In this project I researched Dorothea Lange and Magdiel Lopez. They helped me make my work colorful and stand out. Dorothea is a women from the 1940s who inspired me. She has lots of emotion in her face showing how she feels. This helped me because it shown me how to get my model put put emotion and facial expression on the models face. Magdiel helped me because she has lots of creative ideas and inspired me to be different.
6. They have inspired me to be creative and different and change my images to boring to stand out and colorful.
7. The technique I enjoyed the most was cutting the face even though it was tricky following a tutorial I did it and enjoyed it and I also enjoyed going on Photoshop and going on the settings adding things in and changing things to make my picture better and improved.
8. The most successful thing in my project was putting the flowers in on the cut face and blending it out. I think this because it went successful and went really well. I liked cutting the face and blending it out because at first I struggled with it then I understood how to do it and developed my ideas to make it better.
9. I figured lots of problems in my project . I wasn't being independent I kept asking people for help when I could've done it myself but I chose to ask other people for help. Also I had bad pictures at first and wasn't good and putting the lighting's in the right place top get the nice light on the face but then I developed and been independent and figured it out.
10. In the future I would be more dependent and do it by myself . On my final images I did them by myself so I became more dependent and it did boosted my confidence.
11. If I could go back and change anything I would change the locations, be more independent and to get more better pictures. If I could've changed the locations I think that my backgrounds on my pictures would be a lot more nicer and more developed. If I was more dependent I could've maybe done more things and settings on Photoshop to get a higher grade because my final outcomes don't really have a good background it is plain and doesn't really stand out. If I could've got more pictures it would've been better because my pictures are blurry and not focused enough.
